Britain’s new £7.8 billion space strategy is creating a significant industrial opportunity for UK manufacturers, with precision engineering set to play an important role in translating national ambition into the hardware required for satellites, launch systems and the next generation of orbital technologies. The newly announced UK Space Strategy brings government investment in space under a single four-year programme spanning satellite communications, defence, space surveillance, launch infrastructure, scientific missions and emerging technologies such as in-orbit servicing, assembly and manufacturing.
For the UK’s advanced manufacturing supply chain, the scale of the programme points towards growing demand for the specialist engineering capabilities required to turn sophisticated designs into reliable, repeatable components. At Birmingham-based Rowan Precision, that opportunity aligns closely with an established manufacturing base built around precision CNC machining, sliding head machining, fixed head mill-turn technology and multi-axis machining.
CFO Glenn Aston believes the expansion of Britain’s space economy provides another platform for advanced UK manufacturers to demonstrate their capabilities.

Precision at the Heart of Space Manufacturing
Space hardware presents an exacting manufacturing environment. Satellites, communications equipment, surveillance systems, launch vehicles and scientific instruments can depend upon highly engineered components manufactured to precise dimensional and geometric requirements. Weight, packaging, repeatability and material performance are central considerations, particularly where designers are seeking to maximise capability within tightly controlled mass and dimensional envelopes.
These requirements create a natural role for advanced CNC turned parts, complex milled components and multi-axis machined components, particularly where intricate features can be produced within highly controlled manufacturing processes. Rowan Precision has spent more than 30 years developing its precision machining capability, with production centred around 13-axis CNC sliding head machines, twin-spindle fixed head CNC mill-turn centres and 5-axis/multi-axis machining.
Its sliding head capability supports the efficient manufacture of complex turned components, while twin-spindle mill-turn technology enables multiple features to be produced within closely integrated machining cycles. Five-axis machining adds further capability for components incorporating complex geometries and tight positional tolerances.

The company operates to AS9100, ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485 quality standards, supporting the structured approach to quality management, traceability and process control associated with highly regulated industries.
For Rowan, AS9100 is particularly relevant as the boundaries between aerospace, defence and space manufacturing continue to converge. The government has committed £880 million towards space control and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, alongside £2.8 billion for connectivity programmes including C-LEO and SKYNET defence communications.
Further investment in UK launch capability, space science and in-orbit servicing is expected to stimulate opportunities across an increasingly diverse manufacturing supply chain.

The industry is already valued at approximately £18.6 billion and supports more than 55,000 skilled jobs, with government investment now intended to accelerate its commercial and technological development. That growth also fits into a wider discussion around sovereign manufacturing capability.
Expanding domestic satellite, defence and launch programmes creates opportunities for more of the associated engineering value to remain within UK supply chains, supporting investment in machinery, skills and advanced production processes.
